Talbina is a soothing and nutritious porridge that is made by slow cooking barley grains (Jau) in milk and sweetening it with dates or honey. It has a creamy texture and mild flavours that is very similar to the popular Indian sweet dish kheer.
It is believed to be very beneficial for the health as it has many healing properties, is rich in minerals and vitamins and also helps in reducing cholesterol. It also contains high amounts of soluble fibres which are essential for digestion and helps in getting rid of toxins from the stomach. It is also helpful for lowering blood pressure and is considered to be a natural heart tonic.
The wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to advise people to eat Talbina as it has several benefits. In one Hadit the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Talbina soothers the heart of a patient and gives relief in some of their distress”.
It has been found that Talbina acts as a natural detox and can help in lowering blood sugar levels as it contains low amount of carbohydrates. It also contains a high percentage of Vitamin A which is vital for the health of your eyes and promotes healthy skin. It also helps in boosting your immune system as it is full of antioxidants which is great for fighting against disease causing free radicals. It is also a good source of calcium which is essential for strong teeth and bones.
